Hello there, welcome to the third exploratory outing for our new blog, this time from Wiltshire.
I first went to The Barge Inn at Honeystreet many years ago; it’s a pub next to the Avon and Kennet canal on Salisbury plain, which used to be owned by June and Adrian, parents of an old friend.
Ali had never been there before, so we decided to treat ourselves to a weekend of “glamping” in a bohemian bell tent, on the Barge’s friendly and picturesque camp site, which we used as a base to explore from.
On Saturday, the forecast thunderstorms didn’t materialise, so we took the short drive to Avebury and walked around its famous stone circle.
This extraordinary ancient monument is over 4500 years old, featuring avenues and rings of huge sculpted stones, many of which encircle the village itself.
Pagan rituals are still carried out here on a regular basis and, despite the intermittent rain, at least a couple of “hand fasting” ceremonies were taking place as we walked the site’s circumference.

Coming shortly; Part two – The Avon and Kennet canal.
